Private Play: media, Highlights and privacy
Private Play is an encrypted photo and video vault for iPhone running iOS 17 or later. It plays imported media offline and saves favorite time ranges as Highlights without copying the original video. No app account is required. Network access is needed for purchases and optional NAS downloads.
Documentation checked against the current source on October 1, 2026. App Store availability and the version installed on your device may differ.
Importing from Photos and Files
- Use the app’s import action and choose Photos or Files. The share sheet is another import entry point.
- Select the media to import. Photo imports leave the original items in Photos; importing is not automatic deletion or removal from iCloud Photos.
- Check that the imported items open correctly before managing originals yourself. Identical imports can be skipped automatically.
To get vault items back into Photos, select them and use the release/export action. Vault export remains available after paid access ends. Keep your own backups rather than treating import as a backup guarantee.
Saving a video moment as a Highlight
- Open a video and choose Highlights.
- Adjust the beginning and end and preview the selected range.
- Save the Highlight. You can save multiple moments in the same video and revisit them in the Highlights grid.
A Highlight records a time range; it does not create or re-encode a separate video. It depends on the original vault video remaining available. Favorites and shuffle provide other ways to revisit imported media.
Downloading from a NAS or WebDAV server
Use DS file or an SMB location through Apple’s Files integration, or configure a WebDAV connection directly in Private Play. These are different access paths; Private Play does not provide a standalone SMB server client.
- Confirm that your own server is reachable and that the credentials and permissions allow reading the selected files.
- For Files-based access, configure the server in Files or its provider, then choose the source from Private Play. For WebDAV, enter your server connection in the app.
- Browse and choose files or folders to download. Wait for the download and import to finish before relying on offline playback.
NAS sync downloads from the configured source and does not upload vault media. Downloaded items are encrypted on this device. A server connection itself requires network access; importing does not make the app a two-way cloud backup. If a download fails, check server reachability, permissions and media compatibility; seek help through Support.
Privacy and backup boundaries
Vault media uses on-device AES-GCM encryption and vault keys are stored in the iOS Keychain with device-only accessibility. The app lock uses device authentication, and playback pauses and private content is covered when the app moves to the background. The app does not host your media or require an app account.
Encryption does not replace backups. Keep independent copies of important media. We cannot recover a lost device, lost vault key or forgotten app passcode. Your selected NAS server sees the requests you make to it; Apple handles purchases and operating-system services. See the Privacy Policy for the exact boundaries.
Purchase access, Lifetime and Family Sharing
Apple shows the current price and any eligible offer before you confirm a purchase. Without an eligible offer, the regular price applies. Monthly renews automatically until cancelled in Apple Account settings; follow the cancellation deadline shown by Apple for any offer. Availability and eligibility depend on the account and storefront.
Lifetime is a one-time purchase with no renewal. Buying Lifetime does not cancel an existing Monthly subscription; cancel that renewal separately to avoid further charges. Monthly and Lifetime support Family Sharing subject to Apple’s configuration and family eligibility. The App Store shows the current local price.
When access expires, viewing and adding media require active access, while existing vault items remain exportable. Use Restore Purchases if an eligible purchase is missing; purchases and restoration require Apple connectivity. See Terms of Use.
